Food and Loathing Restaurant Guide -- Ep 7: Instagram This!

Jason and I are on our own for the top of the show this week, as Rich travels. And Jason is fresh off the road himself. He recommends a few favorites he discovered during his trip to Reno: Rice Box Kitchen, Homage and Kwok’s Bistro.

I speak briefly about a dinner at Main St. Provisions in The Arts District.

I also tell you about new Caribbean place I visited on Durango Drive called The House of Dutch Pot, which leads Jason to recommend the patties at the mobile dining experience Yaad Patty.

Moving from Caribbean cuisine to Greek, we tell you about our lunch together at a relatively new spot called Hellas Bakery Café.

For the centerpiece of this week’s show (which we pre-recorded before Rich left town), Emily Romero (@eatmelasvegas) and Philip Tzeng (@LasVegasFill) joined us at Buldogi’s Gourmet Hotdogs for a discussion on the life of a food Instagrammer.

When Jason asks about the biggest one-day jump she’s ever seen in her followers, she mentions a post of an onion volcano from the teppanyaki table at Jjanga Steak & Sushi on Ft. Apache Road.

I tell a story about an old media vs new media moment that we had at Beauty & Essex that still makes me laugh.

When Jason asks our guests for recommendations of really photogenic dishes that will almost guarantee a good response on social media, Emily suggests shooting the king crab at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steaks & Stone Crab in the Forum Shops, or the furikake chicken at Island Flavor, which has locations on Durango Drive, Eastern Avenue and Skye Pointe. Phil recommends the fat babies at Amano at Ann Road and Route 95. They aren’t a quick to recommend selfie spots, since they rarely photograph themselves – but both seem to agree Catch in Aria is a great choice if you want a beautiful setting.

In the final segment this week, I speak to Chef Roy Ellamar about his departure from Harvest in Bellagio, and then speak to Valarie Stunning about Paradise City Creamery’s long-term vegan ice cream pop-up at GaragisteWine Room in The Arts District.

We also had some positive news to share – specifically Michael Mina’s decision to bring Estiotorio Ornos to San Francisco. The restaurant, which already has a Miami location, is a partnership between the celebrity chef and the owners of the off-Strip Greek restaurant Meraki Greek Grill.

Jason also spoke a bit about his OffTheStrip.com story about Kaiseki Yuzu, which you can read in by clicking here.

Our cannabis edibles review this week is actually about a drinkable – the blood orange cardamom social tonic from CANN.
