Food and Loathing Restaurant Guide -- Eps. 19 & 20: Vegas Unstripped & Unstripped Leftovers

Image
We had so much Vegas Unstripped coverage, that we decided to spread it out over two episodes released simultaneously.  Episode 19 kicks off with Al, Rich and Rick Moonen coming to you once again from Rick’s backyard. After a brief discussion of Rick’s glamping adventure in Utah, and his visit to Bryce Canyon , Rich shared his recent culinary adventures visiting two places that recently hosted this podcast: Every Grain and SoulBellyBBQ . We were momentarily proud of him. The he told us about the junk food he ate in Oregon. We were briefly sidetracked into a conversation about our love (and the love of several past guests) of JSX Air – which offers nice option for flying into Las Vegas from certain markets. Rich spoke about attending the wedding of magician MurraySawchuck – which took place at The Plaza . I discussed two takeout meals I’ve had recently. I got a burger from Fukuburger . And I picked up several great dishes, including foie gras Rice Krispies Treats, from Valencia

This week’s episode starts off at Every Grain , the East Charleston Boulevard restaurant run by this week’s guest co-host Jenny Wong and her husband Sheridan Su. Jenny tells us about their signature dish: lo rou fan. Lo Rou Fan from Every Grain Rich Johnson As I run down Jenny’s bio, we mention her restaurant FatChoy in The Eureka. I also mention Eater’s list of the 38 Essential Restaurants in Las Vegas . During our discussion of places we’ve been recently, I quickly mention another visit to Casa Playa at Wynn Encore – with an emphasis on their desserts. I go into a bit more detail, however, on the slider takeout spot Berzerker Burger (@berzerker_burger on Instagram), which is adjacent to Star Piano Cocktail Lounge at 3449 S. Sammy Davis Jr. Drive (the former Sonny’s Saloon). Next, I speak about a return to Firefly , as well as the recent Las Vegas Weekly cover story on Spanish cuisine in Las Vegas. Jenny compares and contrasts a pair of xiao long bao spots: Shanghai Taste in

Food and Loathing Restaurant Guide -- Ep. 17: Jamie Tran Talks Top Chef

Image
We recorded this entire episode at The Black Sheep , Jamie Tran’s amazing Vietnamese/American/fusion/comfort-food restaurant in the Rhodes Ranch neighborhood. Our guest co-host for this episode is Mercy Baron, creator of the Las Vegas Food Fanatics Facebook page , host of the All Forked Up podcast, and creator of BaronsBBQBeat.com . During our discussion of her move to Las Vegas, Mercy singles out Joe Muscaglione of the Shanghai Taste restaurant in Spring Mountain Road's Shanghai Plaza as one of the first local restaurateurs who reached out to her to our community. To kick off our discussion of places we’ve recently visited, Mercy told us about her recent visit to the Downtown Las Vegas Pizza Rock , which is the only valley location that offers the purple potato pizza. I mention my visit to Nightmare on Spring Mountain, the new Halloween pop-up at The Sand Dollar Lounge on Spring Mountain and Polaris Rich and I chat a bit about the media dinner we attended at Hakkasan  in MGM Gra

Food and Loathing Restaurant Guide -- Ep. 16: Moonen, Mexican & Magic Mike

Image
My producer Rich and I are joined once again this week by recurring guest co-host Rick Moonen. Rick starts out by telling us about his trip to Mexico to participate in the Cancun Food and Drink experience at the Royalton Chic Suites . Next up, I chat about my visit to Superfrico , the new psychedelic Italian restaurant in The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. It’s a companion restaurant to the show Opium , which runs in the theater next door. Both are created by the folks at Spiegelworld . While discussing Superfrico’s cuisine, I compare their square pizzas (one of two styles they offer) to the Detroit pizza Chef Marc Marrone offers through his pizza ghost kitchen Gemma Gemma’s . And when discussing their chicken parm, I reference Al Solito Posto in Tivoli Village. I also send a shout out to the head of my favorite local theater company -- MajesticRepertory Theater’s Troy Heard – whom I believe I saw at the Superfrico “friends and family” night. Next up is a conversation of the meal I h
